Mariners Erase 2-0 Deficit Then Score Twice Late To Win 4-2 At St. Joe’s-Brooklyn Saturday Night

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Oct. 1, 2022) – The USMMA men's soccer team fell behind 2-0 early on Saturday night at Aviator Field against St. Joseph's-Brooklyn, but rallied to tie the game up early in the second half, then tallied two goals in the final 19 minutes, as the Mariners won their first Skyline game by the final of 4-2. The victory improves Merchant Marine's record to 4-2-5 (1-0-4 Skyline), while the Bears fall to 2-3-3 (0-2-2 Skyline) with the loss.

Game Links The hosts struck very early, in just the fifth minute to take a 1-0 lead and extended it to two goals in the 27th minute. Before the half was over, freshman Wes Ferry (Newport, N.C.) scored on a PK after St. Joe's was called for a handball in the box off a free kick. That made it 2-1 in favor of the Bears into the break.

In the 53rd minute, Ferry sprung sophomore Jason Healy (King George, Va.) for a breakaway and he scored his third goal in two games to tie the score up at 2-2.

The go-ahead goal came late, in the 72nd minute, off of a throw-in by freshman Michael Hofstetter (Deer Park, N.Y.). His toss found the head of the tall Ferry, who pushed it along to the head of senior Hudson Magee (Chapel Hill, N.C.), who flicked it in off his noggin for his first career goal.

In the final minute, freshman Clayton Ecalono (Pleasant Grove, Utah) sprung junior Miguel Millan (Lake Travis, Texas) for a break down the left side, then with numbers, Millan passed into the box to sophomore Mark Sommer (St. Louis, Mo.), who was wide-open and he fired into the low right side of the net to close out the scoring.

In goal, junior Ashton Carey (Pasadena, Md.) stood tall to secure the victory, especially in the in the second half. He finished with five saves, including four in the final 45 minutes.

For the Bears, sophomore Victor Naci tallied their first goal, while classmate Diego Volpe buried their second. Junior keeper Leonel Bravo made six saves in the losing effort.
