KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 1, 2022) – The USMMA women's soccer team lost its home Skyline Conference match against St. Joseph's-Long Island at Tomb Field on Saturday by the final score of 2-0. Merchant Marine drops to 5-4 overall (0-4 Skyline) in defeat, while the Golden Eagles improve to 5-1-2 (5-0 Skyline).
Prior to the game, the Mariners recognized their five graduating seniors with a very special Senior Day ceremony honoring
Angie Nguyen (Colorado Springs, Colo.),
Abby Morsberger (Mount Airy, Md.),
Jessica Gamsjager (Denton, Texas),
Hailey Hicks (Marietta, Ga.) and
Cassidy Jester (Denton, Texas). They are the first ever class of seniors that USMMA has honored since the brand new women's soccer program became a varsity team this season and helped build the program up from the ground.

In what was a defensive battle throughout the whole 90 minutes of play, USMMA came out with fire in the early portion of the first half – outshooting St. Joe's 4-1 in the first 13 minutes. The Golden Eagles adjusted on the fly and only allowed one shot for the Mariners in the final 32 minutes of the opening frame.
In a well-played road game, the Golden Eagles stemmed the tide early before seizing the momentum. Seven shots fired by St. Joe's to the Mariners' one flipped the field in the first half. The Golden Eagles kept the Mariners pinned in their own zone for extended possessions and broke through with 12:01 remaining in the half. A penalty kick goal by Carli LoNigro put the victors on top, a one-goal lead the SJLI would take into halftime.
Protecting a lead on the road, St. Joseph's-L.I. turned their swarming defense into offense. The Golden Eagles fired 10 shots in the second half, seven of which sophomore goalkeeper
Margret Ripperger (McKinney, Texas) kept out.
Ripperger's seven saves were huge in keeping the Mariners in the game down the stretch. She totaled eight saves for the match.
St. Joe's relentless pressure resulted in an insurance goal from Alesandra Melendez in the 85th minutes to seal the 2-0 win for the Golden Eagles.
The Mariners will look to earn their first conference win on Tuesday night, Oct. 4, when they host the Panthers of SUNY College at Old Westbury on Tomb Field at 7:30 p.m. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on
