The Mariners got on the board first in the 24th minute after senior
Cassidy Jester (Denton, Texas) buried a high shot off the keeper's hands in off assists by sophomores
Jinae Teria (Chalan Pago, Guam) and
Natalia Gallardo (El Paso, Texas). Merchant Marine outshot the Panthers, 7-2, in the opening 45 minutes, including a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Â
Old Westbury flipped the script in the second half, coming out real strong and firing 13 shots to the Mariners' five. Sophomore keeper
Margaret Ripperger (McKinney, Texas) stood tall, though turning aside three good attempts in the half.
Â
However, the Panthers were awarded a penalty kick with under five minutes to play in the game after a tackle in the box, and senior Mia Almonte tied the game up at 1-1 after converting to the left side past a diving Ripperger.
Â
Ripperger finished the night with four saves, while her counterpart for Old Westbury, senior Natalie Intrieri turned away six Mariner shots.
Â
Up next, the Mariners will travel to face Skyline opponent St. Joseph's-Brooklyn this Saturday, Oct. 8, beginning at 4 p.m. at Aviator Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on
