PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (Jan. 30, 2022) – The USMMA men's basketball team saw its win-streak halted on Sunday night with a road loss at Skyline South Division opponent St. Joseph's-L.I., 62-40, at SJC's Danzi Athletic Center. In defeat, the Mariners close out a seven-win January with a 10-7 overall record (7-2 Skyline), while the Golden Eagles improve to 10-7 (6-4 Skyline) with the win.
The 40 points were a season-low for Merchant Marine, as only one player scored in double-digits, sophomore
Bryce Bristow (Plano, Texas), who had 10 points to go along with six rebounds. Classmate
Josh Kauffman (East Providence, R.I.) added eight points and senior
Blaine McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) led the Mariners on the glass with eight boards.
The lead changed twice early, but the Golden Eagles led for a good majority of the first half. It was a one-point game, 9-8 at 12:52, and then a three-point game, 16-13 at 6:47, but seven-straight by St. Joseph's gave the hosts a double-digit lead, 23-13 at 5:02. The hosts finished the half with a 14-point lead, 34-20, and their lead did not fall under 10 the remainder of the night.
For St. Joe's, freshman Alec Tabada recorded a double-double game-highs off 22 points and 11 rebounds. Two other Golden Eagles scored in double-figures, as senior Matthew Hirdt had 12 points and sophomore Ryan McNeely added 11. Grad. student Gordon Shouler led all players in two categories with six assists and three steals.
Up next, the Mariners will travel to Manhattan on Tuesday night, Feb. 1, for a match-up with nationally ranked Yeshiva University. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Maccabees' Max Stern Athletic Center. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on
