COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 29, 2022) – The USMMA wrestling team opened up Centennial Conference action with a trio of duals on Saturday down at Ursinus College. The Mariners opened with a 22-19 victory over the host Bears before falling to Muhlenberg, 25-17. The day ended with an exciting 23-21 win over Johns Hopkins in the finale.

Two Merchant Marine wrestlers recorded perfect 3-0 records – freshman
Cameron Pleninger (Havre, Mont.) at 133, who had one pin against Hopkins, and senior
Dominick Esposito (Marlboro, N.J.) at 174, who registered a pin against Muhlenberg and a major decision against Ursinus, while also picking up a key sudden-victory decision in the win over Hopkins.

Freshmen
Eddie Pinc (Medina, Ohio) at 141,
Austin Manning (Virginia Beach, Va.) at 149 and
Tharen Burns (Spring Valley, Calif.) at 157 and senior
Billy Sims (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) at 184 all had two wins apiece. Pinc earned extra points with a pin against Ursinus and a major decision against Hopkins, while Sims had a major against the Blue Jays.

Junior
James Cruz (Belleville, N.J.) had a huge pin at 197 for USMMA which put them ahead of Johns Hopkins 23-18 going into the final weight class. Freshman
Logan Green (Perkasie, Pa.) also picked up a decision victory for the Mariners at 184 against Muhlenberg.
