KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 26, 2022) – U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball senior Blaine McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) recorded his first 20-point game of the season on Wednesday, as he tied for the game-high with 22 points to lead the Mariners to a 73-57 home Skyline victory over St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. With the win, USMMA improves to 10-6 (7-2 Skyline), while the Bears fall to 2-15 (1-8 Skyline) in defeat.

McDonough shot an impressive 8-for-11 from the field with a trio of three-pointers, while also tying for the team-high with eight rebounds. Three other players scored in double-figures for the Mariners, as sophomore Bryce Bristow (Plano, Texas) and senior Jack Bucher (Carlisle, Pa.) both had 11 points, and freshman Isaac Vencel (Bloomington, Ind.) added 10 to go along with a team-best four assists.

Bristow and freshman Kody Robinson (Woodbridge, N.J.) both tied McDonough for the team-high with eight boards, as Robinson also drained nine points and sophomore Gavin Green (Flower Mound, Texas) contributed six on a pair of three-pointers.

After the victory, USMMA Sports Network's play-by-play man Matias Weilmann caught up with McDonough and Green for postgame interviews. You can view those at this link.

Play was close the entire first half, with the Mariners never leading by more than eight points midway through. The Bears stayed in there, as the KP lead got down to just one point with just over four minutes to play, but Merchant Marine finished strong and took a seven point lead, 32-25, into the locker room at halftime.

The Mariners' advantage reached 14 points just over five minutes into the second, 44-30, but St. Joe's battled all the way back to within just three points, 48-45, at 8:21 after a 15-4 run. After some back-and-forth play, USMMA started to distance themselves with around four minutes to go, as the lead hit double-digits once again and did not fall back under the remainder of the night.

For the Bears, Chris Mikos registered a double-double, tying McDonough for the game-high with 22 points and leading all players with 14 rebounds to go along with six assists. Junior Anderson Beltre added nine points on the evening.

Up next, the Mariners will travel out to Patchogue, N.Y., this Saturday, Jan. 28, to face Skyline South Division foe St. Joseph's-Long Island. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Golden Eagles' Danzi Athletic Center. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Basketball Schedule Page.
