USMMA Can’t Cash In Final Possession; Falls to Old Westbury, 56-54

Box Score

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 15, 2022) – The USMMA men's basketball team had two chances to take the lead or tie in the final three seconds but neither shot fell as Old Westbury defeated the Mariners, 56-54, Saturday afternoon in Skyline Conference action. The loss drops the Mariners to 6-6 on the season, 3-2 in the conference, while the Panthers improved to 6-6 and are 2-3 in league play.

Gavin Green (Flower Mound, Texas) came off the bench and led all USMMA scorers with 15 points on the day, all coming from three-point shots. Bryce Bristow (Plano, TX) put in seven points and secured a team high nine rebounds for the Mariners. USMMA got off to a hot start, shooting 50% from the field in the first half, but that number dropped to 24% in the second half.

Old Westbury controlled the action early with hot three-point shooting and built an early 19-8 lead, sinking five triples in that span. The Mariners closed the first half red-hot, orchestrating a 15-3 run over the final 9:07 of the period to take a 30-28 edge into the intermission.

The two teams stayed within five points of each other the entire second half but the Mariners final lead came at 45-44 on the strength of a Isaac Vencel (Bloomington, Ind.). USMMA got the deficit to two points with 14 seconds remaining on a pair of Josh Kauffman (East Providence, R.I.) free throws and then forced a turnover on the inbounds to set up the games' final possession.

In the last three seconds a three-pointer from Kody Robinson (Woodbridge, N.J.) and a follow-up tip-in attempt from Bristow were both off the mark as the Panthers escaped Liebertz Gymnasium with the 56-54 decision.

Up next, the Mariners will hit the road on Tuesday night, Jan. 18, to face Skyline Conference opponent Farmingdale State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., live stats and a live video feed of the game, if available, will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Basketball Schedule Page.
