PURCHASE, N.Y. (Jan. 12, 2022) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy's men's basketball team led by as many 12 points in the first half against Manhattanville but it took freshman
Kody Robinson's (Woodbridge, N.J.) layup to break a 64-64 tie with just two seconds remaining. The win is the Mariners fourth straight and moves them to 6-5 overall and 3-1 in the Skyline Conference while Manhattanville drops to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
It was a team win with nine Mariners making a field goal while
Josh Kauffman (East Providence, R.I.) put up a team high 12 points. Senior
Blaine McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) finished just shy of a double-double with eight points and 11 rebounds.
USMMA led 12-9 early before orchestrating an 11-2 run to build their largest lead of the day. The spurt included six points from Kauffman and five from
Brandon Bomboy (Yorktown, Va.). Manhattanville did score the last six points of the half, trimming the Mariners advantage to 29-24 heading into the locker room.
The Mariners continued to fight off the Valiants throughout the second half, but the home side eventually took the lead with 3:26 to play on Jackson Leech three-pointer.
Dante Spina (Miami, FL) answered right back for USMMA with a bucket and a foul, completing a three-point of his own to deadlock the sides at 60-60. The teams traded points down the stretch until Robinson found the game winner before Jake Dunn's last gasp three-pointer was off the mark for Manhattanville.
USMMA shot 47% from the field in the victory, including 43% from beyond the arc. The game featured only 18 total turnovers and the Mariners finished with a 35-30 rebounding edge.
Up next, the Mariners will return home on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 15 on to take on Skyline Conference rival Old Westbury. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on
