Mariners Drop Road Affair At Cortland, 4-1

Box Score

CORTLAND, N.Y. (Sept. 5, 2021) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team lost on the road at SUNY Cortland on Sunday, 4-1, at the Red Dragons' T. Fred Holloway Field. The setback drops the Mariners' record to 1-2, while Cortland earns its first victory of the year and improves to 1-1-1.

The Red Dragons got on the board first with a 26th-minute tally by sophomore Jack Coleman, and maintained that 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

USMMA drew even in the 55th minute, when senior Cole Blake (Parker, Colo.) got one past Cortland's junior keeper Braden Melveney on a one-timer off a feed by freshman Maximilian Farris (Clayton, Ga.). However Coleman would provide two daggers just three minutes apart in the 61st and 64th minute to record the hat trick and give the hosts a 3-1 lead.

Cortland added one more on a penalty kick by grad student Blake Aronson late in the game in the 83rd minute to close out the scoring on the afternoon.

Merchant Marine junior keeper Chase Miller (Boise, Idaho) made three saves, while Melveney finished with four to earn the victory for the Red Dragons.

The Mariners' next game is this Wednesday, Sept. 8, up at another SUNY school, New Paltz, beginning at 4 p.m. at the Hawks' South Turf Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page.
