Mariners Drop Five-Setter On The Road At Farmingdale On Thursday

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (Sept. 23, 2021) – The USMMA women's volleyball team dropped a heartbreaker in five sets to Skyline Conference foe Farmingdale State on Thursday night at the Rams' Lynch Center Gymnasium. The Mariners won the first two sets, 25-16 and 25-18, but lost the next three, 25-23, 25-21 and 15-12. Their record drops to 7-2 (2-1 Skyline) on the season, while the Rams improve to 4-7 (1-0 Skyline) with the victory.
 
Seniors Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Sierra Steffen (Encinitas, Calif.) both recorded a team-best 12 kills each, with Gilbertson also picking up 10 digs for a double-double, while also serving up five aces to account for 17.5 points on the night. Senior Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) and junior Claire Hyun (Issaquah, Wash.) both registered double-doubles, as Pinzon led all players in the match with 26 assists and tallied a team-high 13 digs, and Hyun added 10 assists and 12 digs to go along with four service aces.
 
The Rams were led by freshman Cathleen Farrell, who put down a match-high 13 kills with nine digs, four aces and three assisted blocks for 18.5 points, which led all players on the night. Sophomore setter Lexi Cavalieri dished out 21 assists as part of a double-double effort with 10 digs, and freshman Kalena Ricketts chipped in with 12 kills.
 
Both teams tied with 12 service aces each, but the Mariners held the edge in kills (56-45), hitting percentage (.200 to .148), assists (48-39) and digs (78-60), The one area the Rams dominated was in blocks, as they finished with a 10-1 advantage, including on the final point of the night, a solo block in the middle by Ricketts.
 
The Mariners will compete in a tri-match this weekend hosted by Drew University in Madison, N.J. They will take on the host Rangers at 10 a.m., before facing Wilson College at 2 p.m. in a neutral-site showdown.
