KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 18, 2021) – For the second-straight game the USMMA men's soccer team shut out a visiting opponent, as the Mariners opened Skyline Conference play on Saturday with a 4-0 home win over St. Joseph's-Long Island at Bartoszek Field. The win improves Merchant Marine's record to 3-4 (1-0 Skyline), while the Golden Eagles fall to 1-2 (0-1 Skyline) with the setback.

St. Joe's came out of the gate firing and junior goalkeeper Chase Miller (Boise, Idaho) was tested early and often and stepped up big for USMMA. He finished the day with six saves to earn the blank sheet, his second of the season (first solo).

Senior Abram Ehrhorn (Papillion, Neb.) opened the scoring in the 15th minute. He received a pass in the middle of the box that was sent in from freshman Fensom Hensley (Cumberland, R.I.) and flicked to Ehrhorn by senior Luke Sturtz (Norman, Okla.). Ehrhorn turned quickly and ripped a shot past SJC senior keeper Tyler Flaherty.

Junior Ben Davis (Virginia Beach, Va.) doubled the lead just over eight minutes later with the first of his two goals on the afternoon. Both his tallies – this one and the one that closed out the scoring in the 59th minute – were assisted by freshman Maximilian Farris (Clayton, Ga.) on the same type of play. Farris used his speed to bust down the left side and sent centering passes in to Davis who one-timed both feeds into the net.

The Mariners' third goal came in the 38th minute when freshman Mark Sommer (St. Louis, Mo.) picked up his second tally in as many games. Senior Cole Blake (Parker, Colo.) led Sommer to a wide-open one-on-one with the keeper down low and the Plebe buried a shot into the low right corner.

For the Golden Eagles, Flaherty finished the afternoon with three saves, while freshman forward Vincent Mariani had two of St. Joseph's six shots on goal.

The Mariners will close out their homestand on Monday night, Sept. 20, with a non-conference tilt against Medgar Evers College. Kickoff against the Cougars is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bartoszek Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page.
