KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 14, 2021) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team lost to arch-rival Coast Guard on Tuesday night, 25-11, 25-20 and 25-19, at the Liebertz Gymnasium, ending their five-match win-streak to start the season.

Sophomore
Brittany Breland (Bryan, Texas) led the Mariners
(5-1) with eight kills on the night, while junior
Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) added five and seniors
Shelby Bowman (Redmond, Wash.) and
Juliet Vendl (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had four kills apiece. Junior libero
Skyler Burnham (Reading, Pa.) picked up a match-high 13 digs, while Bowman, Smith and senior
Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) all had six digs. Pinzon finished the night with 18 assists.

For Coast Guard (6-3), senior Amanda Dake led all players in the match with 12 kills, while also serving up a match-high five aces and picking up eight digs. Junior Noelle Turskey dished out a match-best 38 assists, and sophomore libero Carmen Zipf had a team-high nine digs. The Bears hit at a .351 clip on the night and put down nine total blocks.

The Mariners open Skyline Conference play on Thursday night, Sept. 16, on the road at Purchase College beginning at 7 p.m.
