KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 11, 2021) – The USMMA women's volleyball team kept on rolling on Saturday with sweeps in both matches of a home tri-match at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners cruised past Pratt in the opener (25-15, 25-15, 25-17) and finished the day off with a win over the Mitchell Mariners (25-17, 25-17, 25-15). The victories improve Merchant Marine's record to a perfect 5-0 to start the year.
 
Prior to the opening match against Pratt, the volleyball program paid tribute to their six graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony honoring Sierra Steffen (Encinitas, Calif.), Raven Kirsch (South Wales, N.Y.), Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.), Juliet Vendl (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Shelby Bowman (Redmond, Wash.). On the court, Gilbertson led all players with 19 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore Amy Jones (Roscoe, Ill.) chipped in with eight kills and Pinzon dished out a match-high 33 assists. For the full box score from the Pratt match, click here.
 
In the Mariners' second match (the third overall on the day), they defeated a team with the same mascot as them – the Mariners of Mitchell College. It was junior Paige Smith's (Virginia Beach, Va.) turn to shine, as she put down a match-best 13 kills. Junior libero Skyler Burnham (Reading, Pa.) picked up 10 digs to lead all players and Pinzon had 33 assists once again. The box score for the Mitchell match can be viewed at this link.
