Men’s Lacrosse Drops Road Skyline Contest At Farmingdale State

Box Score

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (April 27, 2021) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team lost on the road at Skyline rival Farmingdale State, 17-7, on Tuesday night at Rams Field. In defeat, the Mariners' record falls to 3-2 (3-2 Skyline), and FSC improves to 5-1 (5-1 Skyline) with the win.

Junior Matt Groom (Bethpage, N.Y.) led USMMA with four goals, while seniors Nick Alberici (Auburn, N.Y.) and Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) both tallied three points apiece – Alberici finding the back of the net twice with one assists and Morsberger dishing out three helpers. A pair of Plebes also got on the scoresheet, as Maverick Geller (Hood River, Ore.) scored once and Sam Winkler (Moorestown, N.J.) added an assist.

Defensively, freshman Dom Mirack (Stevensville, Md.) tied for the game-high with two caused turnovers and two juniors both picked up a team-best four groundballs each – Jason Aiello (Northport, N.Y.) and Ben Mathews (Chesapeake, Va.).

Without the services of their top face-off man, the Mariners struggled in the X, winning just 4-of-27. In goal, senior Brendan Kane (Lewes, Del.) suffered the loss despite making nine saves over 45 minutes. Classmate Shannon Byrne II (Severna Park, Md.) played the final quarter and made two stops.

The Rams scored the first two goals of the game before Groom got Merchant Marine on the board at 11:17 to make it a one-goal game. After the two teams traded the next two goals, Farmingdale strung together four-straight to take a 7-2 lead at 2:42 of the opening quarter. Groom scored his third goal at 1:51, but FSC got their second man-up goal of the stanza to close out the scoring, 9-3, after the opening 15 minutes.

Farmingdale recorded the first goal of the second, but that was all the Mariner defense allowed in the quarter. Geller and Alberici went back-to-back at 4:26 and 3:01, respectively, and the visitors went into the break trailing 9-5.

The Rams got three-straight quickly early in the third to open up a seven-goal lead. USMMA responded with two-in-a-row, but once again the hosts scored three-consecutive to close out the quarter with a 15-7 lead.

There were only two goals scored in the fourth, both by Farmingdale, as the Rams shut down the Mariner offense and cruised to the victory.

Senior face-off man John McMahon won 16-of-16 for FSC and picked up a game-high 16 groundballs, while also recording four points on three goals and one assist. Classmate Terrence Haggerty led six Rams that registered multi-point nights, as he bagged nine points on six goals and three assists. Sophomore Jack Conklin tied Mirack with two caused turnovers, and freshman goalie Kevin Loonie made five saves in the first half to earn the win. Junior Will DeCamp replaced him at halftime and made eight stops.

Up next, the Mariners travel to Purchase College this Friday night, April 30, for their regular-season finale beginning at 7 p.m. at Panthers Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Lacrosse Schedule Page.
