KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 13, 2021) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team grabbed its second-straight victory on Tuesday night with a 9-6 home triumph over St. Joseph's-Long Island in Skyline Conference action at Brooks Stadium. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 2-1 (2-1 Skyline), while the Golden Eagles fall to 1-3 (1-3 Skyline) in defeat.
Once again, senior
Nick Alberici (Auburn, N.Y.) had a big night for USMMA, as he scored a game-high five goals to go along with three groundballs. Freshman
James Dotsikas (Jacksonville, Fla.) was not far behind with four points on a goal and three assists, junior
Jack Browne (Summit, N.J.) added one tally and two helpers and classmate
Matt Groom (Bethpage, N.Y.) found the back of the net twice. Two other Mariners had assists on the night – freshman
Sam Winkler (Moorestown, N.J.) and senior
Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.).
Senior
Kyle Buser (Babylon, N.Y.) won 13-of-19 face-offs and picked up a game-best eight groundballs. Three defenders all tied for the game high with two caused turnovers – juniors
Jason Aiello (Northport, N.Y.) and
Zach Hasbrouck (Greenvale, N.Y.) as well as freshman
Dom Mirack (Stevensville, Md.). Aiello also scooped up seven groundballs, while junior
Antony DeJulius (Coventry, Conn.) grabbed five GBs. Senior
Brendan Kane (Lewes, Del.) earned the win in goal after making seven saves.
The Mariners never trailed on the night, and out-shot SJC, 43-23. After the two teams traded the first four goals, the Blue and Gray went on a tear – scoring the next four goals (and six of seven) to take a commanding 8-3 lead at 6:14 of the third.
The Golden Eagles out-scored Merchant Marine, 3-1, over the final 20-plus minutes of the game, but the Mariners' lead was too much for the guests to overcome.
For St. Joe's, sophomore Jack Gilbride had a team-high four points on three goals and an assist. Two other Golden Eagles' had two points each – junior Tim McCann with two goals and classmate Matt Trautman with two helpers. Senior Vincent Raccuglia scooped up a team-best five groundballs and two players tied for the game-high with two caused turnovers. Junior Andrew Brust kept the game close as he was forced to make 15 saves in the losing effort.
