KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 11, 2026) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team came up short at home on Saturday, falling to Skyline Conference rival SUNY Maritime, 13-11, in the annual Hagedorn Cup showdown at Brooks Stadium. The Privateers used a decisive third quarter to build separation before the Mariners mounted a late rally that cut the deficit to just two goals in the final minutes. In defeat, USMMA falls to 6-5 overall (2-1 Skyline), while Maritime improves to 5-7 (3-0 Skyline).

Landon Locke (Midlothian, Va.) led the USMMA offense with four points on three goals and one assist, while senior
Kyle Hennelly (Dacula, Ga.) added three points behind two goals and one helper. Sophomore
Ryan Sullivan (Warwick, N.Y.) found the back of the net twice and senior
Owen Barcus (Annapolis, Md.) chipped in with a goal and an assist. A trio of seniors also scored for the Mariners –
William Badeer (Pittsburgh, Pa.),
Jack DeTommaso (Massapequa, N.Y.), and
Kenneth Harrison (Ellicott City, Md.), while freshman
Dylan Sullivan (Warwick, N.Y.) recorded an assist.
Defensively, senior
Michael Hofstetter (Deer Park, N.Y.) led Merchant Marine with a team-high eight ground balls, while classmate
Michael Valentine IV (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) added four GBs and two caused turnovers. Sophomore
Tucker Kuhn (Towson, Md.) and senior
Jason Rupli (Washington, D.C.) handled the majority of the face-offs, with Kuhn winning eight and collecting five ground balls and Rupli winning five including some key draws in the fourth quarter. In goal, junior
Julian Garcia (Lakeway, Texas) made eight saves over 60 minutes of action.
The opening quarter featured early momentum swings. After SUNY Maritime struck first with a man-up goal, the Mariners responded with consecutive tallies from Hennelly and Barcus to take a 2-1 lead. The Privateers answered with three straight goals to close the period, including another extra-man strike, to carry a 4-2 advantage into the second.
USMMA battled back in the second quarter, getting goals from DeTommaso, Locke, and
Ryan Sullivan to tie the game at 5-5 midway through the period. However, SUNY Maritime capitalized late, scoring twice in the final two minutes to take a 7-5 lead into halftime.
The third quarter proved to be the turning point. After Harrison cut the deficit to one early, the Privateers responded with a sustained 6-0 run over a nine-minute stretch, fueled by efficient offense and strong face-off play, to build a 13-6 lead entering the fourth.
The Mariners refused to go away in the final period. Badeer and Hennelly sparked the comeback effort before Locke and
Ryan Sullivan added goals during a four-goal run that trimmed the deficit to 13-10 with just over six minutes remaining. Locke struck again with just over two minutes left to make it a two-goal game, and USMMA generated multiple late chances, but Maritime's defense held firm down the stretch to secure the win.
USMMA finished with advantages in shots (46-36) and ground balls (35-31), but SUNY Maritime controlled key possession areas, winning the face-off battle 15-13 and converting on two of its three extra-man opportunities while holding the Mariners scoreless in three attempts.
SUNY Maritime was led offensively by Nick Uzakewicz, who recorded nine points on one goal and eight assists, while Michael Wiegand added five goals. Christopher Laino controlled the face-off X, winning 14-of-20 draws, and goalkeeper Cristian Scaffaro made 16 saves to earn the victory.
The Mariners return to action on Tuesday night, April 14, when they host Manhattanville in Skyline Conference play for their annual 142 Game. Opening face-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Brooks Stadium.
