Mariners Claim Huge 124-64 Home Win Over Medgar Evers In Season-Opener

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 9, 2021) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team put on a dazzling display, pleasing the raucous home crowd at the Liebertz Gym on Tuesday night in a 124-64 victory over Medgar Evers College in both teams' season-opener. The 124 points is the most the Mariners have scored since the 2001-02 season, when they claimed a 123-42 win over the former Polytechnic Institute University of New York.
 
USMMA Notables
  • Sophomore Gavin Green (Flower Mound, Texas) tied for the team-high with 17 points, as he led all players in the game with five 3-pointers.
  • Every single player on the Mariner roster scored a point in the victory, with eight scoring in double-digits.
  • Two players had double-doubles on the night – senior Blaine McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) and sophomore Bryce Bristow (Plano, Texas) both recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds each.
  • Sophomore Josh Kauffman (East Providence, R.I.) drained four 3's and finished with 14 points and freshman Kody Robinson (Woodbridge, N.J.) contributed 12 points.
  • Freshmen Cam Baldwin (Acworth, Ga.) and Isaac Vencel (Bloomington, Ind.) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 and 10 points, respectively, with Baldwin also tying for the game-high with two blocks and Vencel also dishing out six assists to lead all players.
  • Senior Isaiah Nix (Yorktown, Va.) brought down a game-best 11 rebounds, while also registering seven points and five assists.
 
A Closer Look At The Numbers
  • The Mariners shot at a 52.9% clip (46-for-87) and hit an amazing 17 three-pointers on the night (43.6%). They held the Cougars to just 32.9% shooting (25-for-76).
  • USMMA out-rebounded Medgar Evers by an unbelievable 68-35 margin, and used 22 offensive boards to pile on 26 second-chance points.
  • The Mariners also had 54 points in the paint to the Cougars' 26, and also led in points off of turnovers, 30-14.
 
Medgar Evers' Leaders
  • The Cougars were led by Mousa Sinera, who tied Green for the game-high with 17 points, while also bringing down seven rebounds.
  • Andre Evans Jr. also had a double-digit performance with 10 points.
  • Joshua Jean Pierre brought down a team-best nine boards.
 
Up Next
  • The Mariners will travel up to New London, Conn., this Saturday, Nov. 13, for a non-conference game at Connecticut College. The start time for that game against the Camels has been pushed back to a 5 p.m. start. It will be played at Conn. College's Luce Fieldhouse.
