KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 9, 2021) – The USMMA men's soccer team lost a tough one to Skyline Conference foe Manhattanville at home on Saturday afternoon at Bartoszek Field by the final of 1-0. The setback drops the Mariners' record to 8-6 overall (5-2 Skyline), while the Valiants improve to 6-4-2 (5-0-1 Skyline) with the victory.
Â
The lone goal of the game came in the 17th minute after a penalty kick was called on a hard foul by the Mariners on a slide tackle in the box. Manhattanville junior Eli Pardo took the PK for the visitors and found the back of the net in the top left corner.
Â
The Mariners finished the first half with a 3-2 advantage in shots, but the goal by the Valiants was the only shot on goal for either team in the opening 45 minutes.
Â
Merchant Marine came out strong in the second half, and wound up outshooting Manhattanville, 10-6, including five on goal, but Manhattanville's tall sophomore keeper Luis Granados made five saves to keep his clean sheet.
Â
The Mariners had multiple chances off of deep throw-ins and corners, but arguably the best chance came on a throw-in in the 85th minute when junior
Hudson Magee (Chapel Hill, N.C.) got a header that was blocked down and the ball bounced out to the top of the box to senior
Cole Blake (Parker, Colo.), who ripped a shot through traffic, but Granados made a diving stop to his left to keep it out.
Â
Junior keeper
Chase Miller (Boise, Idaho) made one save on the afternoon for USMMA.
Â
The Mariners are back in action this coming Tuesday, Oct. 12, when they play host to Skyline opponent Sarah Lawrence College. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bartoszek Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on
