Soccer Suffers 2-1 Setback At Mount St. Mary Wednesday Night

Box Score

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (Oct. 20, 2021) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team lost on the road at Skyline Conference opponent Mount St. Mary, 2-1, on Wednesday night at the Knights' Kaplan Field. The Mariners' record drops to 10-7 (7-3 Skyline) in defeat, while MSMC improves to 8-5-1 (7-1-1 Skyline) with the win.

USMMA had four of the first six shots of the night, but none were on target, while the Knights put one on goal that was saved by junior Chase Miller (Boise, Idaho) in the 28th minute. The hosts broke the stalemate in the 40th minute on a tally by sophomore Peter Ramirez, assisted by junior Matt Wyant. Mount St. Mary kept the pressure late in the half, as they fired two more shots, one blocked by the Mariner defense and another saved by Miller in the final minute of the half.

Merchant Marine came out strong to start the second half with the first three shots, the first wide, the second blocked and the third by senior Abram Ehrhorn (Papillion, Neb.) that was stopped by MSMC's junior keeper Zach Decker.

The Knights doubled their lead after flipping the script and rattling off three-straight shots of their own, with the third resulting in a goal in the 79th minute by sophomore Jake Kwong, assisted by freshman Jack Perna.

The Mariners got one back just over five minutes later in the 84th minute when senior Michael Melton (Denver, Colo.) found the back of the net for his first of the season. However, that was the last shot that either team recorded on the night.

Miller ended the night with two saves, while Decker had one stop for the Mount.

Up next, the Mariners will close out the regular season with a road game at Skyline rival SUNY Maritime College this Saturday, Oct. 23. Kickoff against the Privateers is scheduled for 12-noon at Reinhart Field in The Bronx, N.Y. Any live links for the game will be posted on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page prior to Saturday.
