RIVERDALE, N.Y. | Junior midfielder Ben Davis (Virginia Beach, Va.) provided all the offense the United States Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team would need Saturday afternoon, as the visiting Mariners used stout defense to back into the win column with a 1-0, Skyline Conference victory over host College of Mount Saint Vincent.

USMMA (7-5, 4-1) is now tied at the top of the Skyline Conference table with 12 points in the standings, and have won six of its last seven matches by a combined 27-2 count.

After Mount Saint Vincent (5-1-2, 3-1-1) hit the woodwork 15 minutes in on the second shot of the contest, Merchant Marine accounted for the only goal on the day six minutes later when Davis converted a feed from sophomore forward Miguel Millan (Lake Travis, Texas) for his fourth tally of the 2021 campaign.

USMMA withstood a Dolphins onslaught in the second half, as the hosts outshot the Mariners 10-3 in the second half. The upperclass defense of seniors Luke Sturtz (Norman, Okla.), David Kelly (Lutherville, Md.) and Abram Ehrhorn (Papillon, Neb.), along with junior Hudson Magee (Chapel Hill, N.C.), stood tall in the Merchant Marine back four, while junior keeper Chase Miller (Boise, Idaho) made three of his four stops in the latter frame to post his side's sixth clean sheet in the last 18 days.

Head coach Drew McCarthy's side is back in Wednesday night (Oct. 6), when Merchant Marine continues Skyline play by playing host to St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn.
