On the field, it was underclassmen that found the back of the net for the Mariners, as three freshmen and a sophomore scored on the afternoon. Freshman
Mark Sommer (St. Louis, Mo.) opened the scoring in the 18th minute off a scrum in front, assisted by Melton, and then fellow Plebe
Maximilian Farris (Clayton, Ga.) doubled the lead in the 36th minute after a great individual effort streaking down the left side.
Â
In the second half, just a few minutes after being denied an opportunity after a great Yeshiva save, sophomore
Miguel Millan (Lake Travis, Texas) ripped a shot into the twine after a give-and-go with Sommer after a corner in the 48th minute to make it 3-0. Freshman
Derek Vanasse (Camarillo, Calif.) closed out the scoring for USMMA with a beautiful leaping header after a great cross by Ehrhorn in the 54th minute.
Â
The Maccabees did add two goals late to make it interesting, but the Mariners held on for the victory.
Â
Junior keeper
Chase Miller (Boise, Idaho) made two saves in nearly 63 minutes to earn the victory, while sophomore
Ashton Carey (Pasadena, Md.) had one stop in relief. Their counterpart for Yeshiva, junior Benjamin Brener made six saves in the losing effort.
Â
Up next, the Mariners have a key late-season matchup on the road at Mount St. Mary on Wednesday night, kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Knights' Kaplan Field. If live links are available for the game they will be posted on
