Volleyball Rides Win-Streak To Nine With Home Sweep Over Sarah Lawrence

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 14, 2021) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team defeated visiting Skyline opponent Sarah Lawrence College in straight sets, 25-13, 25-16, 26-16, on Thursday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners' win-streak is now up to nine-straight matches, as they improve their overall record to 16-3 (8-1 Skyline), while the Gryphons fall to 8-11 (5-2 Skyline).

Senior Sierra Steffen (Encinitas, Calif.) led all players on the night and matched her career-high with 12 kills on .455 hitting, while Breland added a career-high 11 kills with a .350 hitting percentage. Junior Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) recorded a double-double with 10 kills and a team-high 13 digs, and sophomore Meredith Buchanan (Kathleen, Ga.) chipped in with seven kills on a team-best .467 hitting.
 
The Mariners' two setters had great nights, as senior Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) dished out a match-high 23 assists with seven digs and Hyun added 17 helpers with five digs. Senior Juliet Vendl (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and sophomore Amy Jones (Roscoe, Ill.) both contributed four kills on the night with Vendl also putting down a solo block and Jones leading the Mariners with two assisted blocks. And defensively, senior libero Shelby Bowman (Redmond, Wash.) picked up 12 digs in the win.
 
The Mariners as a team hit at a .322 clip (50k-13e-115ta) and forced Sarah Lawrence to hit in the negative, -.032 (17k-20e-93ta). The Gryphons did lead in one category, though, as they had five service aces to USMMA's two.
 
SLC was led by sophomore Kaille Ferguson, who had six kills and match-best 15 digs. Junior libero Jane Joncha picked up 13 digs, and sophomore Mia Rector and senior Isabel Pecora both dished out a team-best six assists each.
 
The Mariners will have the weekend off from competition, and will hit the court once again to try and get their win-streak to double-digits at Skyline rival SUNY Maritime this Monday, Oct. 18, in The Bronx.
