STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (April 6, 2016) – Despite a late rally with five runs in the last four innings, the USMMA baseball team dropped a non-conference tilt at the College of Staten Island on Wednesday night by the final score of 9-6. The loss drops the Mariners to 6-16 on the season, while the Dolphins improve to 12-9.

Junior Matthew Thomson (Memphis, Tenn.) led the way for Merchant Marine with three runs batted in on a two-run double in the sixth and a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Sophomore Steve Lucy (Leawood, Kan.) scored twice for USMMA. Classmate Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) had the only other RBI for the Mariners with a single in the third that plated freshman Tyler Mowry (Peachtree City, Ga.) to open the scoring on the night.

The Dolphins responded with six runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-1, but just one of them was earned as a costly fielding error with two outs allowed the hosts to score five more times when the inning should've been over. CSI added one more in the fourth and answered the Mariners' rally of three runs in the top of the sixth with two runs of their own in the bottom half of that inning.

Sophomore Justus Martin (Eaton, Colo.) suffered the loss on the mound, as he allowed six runs (one earned) on four hits with three strikeouts in three innings of work. Freshman Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.) tossed two innings of relief and allowed one run on two hits before classmate John Kelly Jr. (Apex, N.C.) and senior twins Jeff and Brad Suciu (Zanesville, Ohio) finished out the game with an inning of relief each.
