While many coaches around his age are retired or are preparing to take Social Security checks, Danny Nee still exhibits the energy and fire of a 30-year-old coach. Whether it is mapping out strategy during a game, giving instruction in practice or just giving a referee a piece of his mind in a tight contest, Nee usually can be found roaming the sidelines of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy shouting instructions, exhorting his team on, applauding good plays or criticizing bad decisions of his players and referees.

A game that started out so optimistically turned into a long afternoon for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon. After battling talented and favored Wesleyan University close for most of the opening half, the Mariners fell victim to the quick and talented Cardinals en route to a 75-53 loss in a men’s non-conference basketball encounter at Liebertz Gymnasium.

For the second time in four days, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy lived on the edge. This time, however, the Mariners did not survive to talk about it. Whatever magic they had in their double-overtime win over Drew University on Saturday could not be duplicated on Tuesday night as they dropped a frustrating and disappointing 85-75 loss to Stevens Tech in two OTs.

MADISON, N.J. – On Thursday morning, the Landmark Conference office released its 2010-11 men’s basketball all-conference teams and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy had three impressive accolades. Senior forward Matt Hueber (Alexandria, Va.) was tabbed to the First Team, while fellow senior forward Tom Izzo (Bridgeport, W. Va.) notched a spot on the Second Team. Izzo was also named the Defensive Player of the Year.

The Mariners will next travel to Scranton, Pa. to face the University of Scranton in the conference semifinals on Wednesday night, while Drew will host Catholic University.
