United States Merchant Marine Academy

EXCELLENCE IN ATHLETICS

Captain James Harvey Tomb Trophy (“The Industry Oar”)

Beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year, an incentive was added for winning athletic contests between the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and SUNY Maritime. Rivals on the fields of competition and allies on the waters, the institutions began competing for the Captain James Harvey Tomb Trophy.

The Tomb Trophy was named in honor of Captain James Harvey Tomb, a distinguished leader with lasting ties to both institutions. Captain Tomb served as Superintendent of SUNY Maritime from 1927 to 1942 before becoming the first Superintendent of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in 1942. His legacy of leadership and commitment to maritime education continues to unite the two academies in spirited competition.

One point is awarded for a win for each NCAA sport competition between the schools. At the conclusion of the athletic seasons, the institution with the most points is awarded the “Industry Oar,” a symbol of the Tomb Trophy.
