Mariners finish up on a winning note, down RPI, 31-24; 1st win in Troy since 1960
The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrapped up its season on a winning note on Saturday, winning at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for the first time since 1960. Junior quarterback Alex Coviello ran for 135 yards and threw for 164 and three touchdowns to lead the Mariners to a 31-24 Liberty victory over RPI in the season finale for both teams.

The Class of 2011 included Jeffrey Brennan (’95, soccer), Kevin Feighery (’95, football, basketball and baseball), Louis Broccoli (’55, track and cross country), Donald Cocazzo (’70, football), Michael Connors (’81, crew), Dominic DeFilippi (honorary) and George Edward “Skip” Prosser (’72, special).

How the Hoffman Cup came to be
Tom Hoffman, a 1975 graduate of St. Lawrence, very nearly followed in his father's footsteps and came to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. His father, Capt. Richard A. Hoffman is a 1944 graduate of Kings Point and wanted his son to experience an education at the service academy.

Raising money to battle pediatric cancer is not a hairy situation for the football team
The football team had a close shave on Friday afternoon, and the Mariners didn’t even play a game. Some 60 members of the team ventured down to the U.S. Merchant Marine barbershop to get their heads shaved to raise money for Mikey Lograno-Weinstein, a five-year-old from Rockaway Beach, N.Y. who has pediatric brain cancer.

Football Drops Heartbreaker in Season Finale vs. RPI, 29-27
KINGS POINT, N.Y. – With two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, sophomore wideout Richard Lyons (Virginia Beach, Va.) of the United States Merchant Marine Academy football team ran for a 38-yard touchdown to put the Mariners ahead, 27-26, over the Engineers of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). In heartbreaking fashion however, RPI drove down the field in the remaining couple of minutes and set up a 29-yard field goal, which senior kicker Peter Nilson (Appleton, Wis.) successfully nailed to give the Engineers a 29-27 lead as time expired on Saturday afternoon at Captain Tomb Field in Kings Point, N.Y.

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – On Saturday afternoon, sophomore running back John-Leon Gosselin (Nashua, N.Y.) put together a three-touchdown, 201-yard day to help the United States Merchant Marine Academy football squad defeat Liberty League-opponent Union College, 28-21, at Frank Bailey Field in Schenectady, N.Y. With the victory, the Mariners improved to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in the league. Following the loss, the Dutchmen fell to 2-6 on the year and 2-4 in the conference.

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – On Saturday afternoon, the United States Merchant Marine Academy football team dropped a conference contest against Hobart College, 40-33, at Captain Tomb Field in Kings Point, N.Y. With the victory, the Statesmen improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Liberty League. Following the defeat, the Mariners fell to 3-5 on the year and 2-2 in conference play.
