How It Happened
FDU-Florham opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. The Blue and Gray answered in the second inning when sophomore Braden Vazquez (Missouri City, Texas) ripped an RBI double down the left field line to tie the game at 1-1.
The Devils regained the lead in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single to go back in front 2-1.
Merchant Marine had an opportunity to even the score in the fifth inning. Vazquez reached base and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt and throwing error, and junior Tommy Chiappetti (Buckeye, Ariz.) worked a walk to put two runners on. However, Kings Point was unable to capitalize as the next two batters were retired to end the threat.
KP mounted one final push in the ninth inning. Senior Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) and junior Christian Gamez (Kent Island, Md.) recorded back-to-back singles to put the tying run on base. The Devils would close the door with a strikeout and a flyout to pick up the 2-1 victory.
