Lutz Scores As Mariners Draw Rival SUNY Maritime, 1-1

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2026) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team battled rival SUNY Maritime to a 1-1 draw in Skyline Conference action Friday night at Bartoszek Field. The Mariners moved to 5-2-8 overall (4-0-5 Skyline), while the Privateers moved to 4-6-3 (3-2-3 Skyline).

Game Link The two sides played to a scoreless opening half, with Merchant Marine holding a 6-4 advantage in shots. Senior keeper Ethan Howell (Alexandria, Va.) made his lone save of the period on an Aiden Burns header in the 15th minute, while sophomore Brendan Farrell (Holbrook, N.Y.) put USMMA's only first-half shot on goal in the 42nd minute.

The Mariners came out firing after halftime. Junior Colin Robertson (Milford, Mich.) forced SUNY Maritime goalkeeper Aidan Slovensky into a save in the 47th minute before another Robertson attempt was stopped in the 53rd. Moments later, Robertson headed a shot off the post, and sophomore Jackson Justice (Winchester, Va.) followed just 19 seconds later with a shot that struck the crossbar.

Merchant Marine finally broke through in the 60th minute. Freshman Drew Coyne (Harrington, N.J.) set up junior Cal Lutz (South Pasadena, Calif.), who found the back of the net to give the Mariners a 1-0 advantage.

The lead lasted just over two minutes, however, as SUNY Maritime's Yakob Muller scored in the 62nd minute to even the game at 1-1.

USMMA continued to generate opportunities following the equalizer. Robertson forced another save in the 67th minute and later had a header stopped in the 83rd as the Mariners searched for the go-ahead goal. Maritime also threatened late, but Howell made saves in the 74th and 76th minutes to keep the game level.

Merchant Marine finished with a 16-9 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. The Mariners also held an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks and outshot the Privateers 10-5 in the second half.

Robertson led all USMMA players with seven shots, including four on goal. Howell played all 90 minutes and made three saves, while Slovensky finished with five saves for SUNY Maritime.

The Mariners return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 20, when they host Manhattanville at Bartoszek Field for a Skyline Conference matchup at 7 p.m.
