Drew Boukidis (Charlotte, N.C.) converted a penalty kick in the 87th minute to lift the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over archrival Coast Guard on Friday night at Bartoszek Field. The win was the Mariners' first over the Bears since 2015, improving their record to 3-2-1 on the season, while Coast Guard dropped to 2-2-1.

Andrew Jung (Fairfax, Va.) led the Blue and Gray attack with a team-high five shots while sophomore
Andrew Campbell (Severna Park, Md.) had three shots and classmates
Robert Derwin (East Meadow, N.Y.) and
Cal Lutz (Charlotte, N.C.) had two each.Â
Jung put USMMA ahead in the eighth minute, scoring off a rebound for his first goal of the season to make it 1-0. Coast Guard responded quickly, equalizing in the 13th minute when Aki Freeman scored on a header off a well-placed cross from Nick Yorgason, tying it 1-1. Merchant Marine generated several more chances in the half, but Coast Guard goalkeeper Jack Putnam was able to make three key saves to keep the game tied 1-1 going into halftime.
The second half saw both defenses stand firm until late. USMMA threatened with shots from junior
Patrick Novotny (Fort Worth, Texas) in the 72nd minute and Campbell in the 85th minute before finally breaking through. In the 87th minute, Boukidis was taken down in the Penalty area, earning the Mariners a penalty kick opportunity to regain the lead. He buried a right-footed blast into the left pocket of the net to give USMMA the decisive 2-1 lead.
The Mariners outshot Coast Guard 17-7 overall.

Ethan Howell (Alexandria, Va.) made two saves and picked up the victory.
USMMA returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 17, for their Skyline Conference Opener against St. Joseph's Long Island at 7 p.m. at Bartoszek Field.
