#17 Mariners Finish Mets With 10 NCAA Qualifiers; Monahan, Tedesco And Lopez Win Major Awards

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 23, 2020) – This weekend, the #17 USMMA men's swimming & diving teams competed in the 2020 Metropolitan Conference Championship Meet. The Mariners came in third place at the event with 1,445.5, not far behind first-place Rowan (1,510) and second-place TCNJ (1,478.5). 

Numerous big stories came out of the weekend for the Merchant Marine men. Senior Nolan Monahan (Stafford, Va.) was named the Mets Conference Swimmer of the Year, Head Coach Sean Tedesco earned Swimming Coach of the Year and Diving Coach Johan C. Lopez garnered Diving Coach of the Year honors. 

For Lopez it was the second-straight season that he earned the award, while Tedesco takes home his award for the third-consecutive year. It's also his fifth Mets Conference Coach of the Year award and 26th overall COY award in his 19 years at Kings Point. 

The Mariners also had 10 NCAA qualifiers hit a total of 17 NCAA Cuts, which is the third most qualifiers and cuts in a single season in Academy history. They also broke eight Academy Records and three D1 Rutgers Pool Records over the weekend. 

Listed below are all the NCAA Qualifiers, the events they qualified for and their records broken.

  • Junior diver Gillem McMillan (Knoxville, Tenn.) – winning the one-meter board (488.28) and second in the three-meter board (482.85 in prelims and 475.48 in finals)
  • Freshman diver Armand Hebert (Chicopee, Mass.) – coming in third in the one-meter board (421.04 in the finals)
  • Junior Jack Higgins (Needham, Mass.) – in the 50 free leading off 200 free relay prelims in an Academy Record (20.53) and in the 100 breast during prelims (55.60)
  • Monahan – winning the 200 IM (1:49.83), winning the 100 breast setting an Academy Record twice and D1 Rutgers Pool Record (54.09 in prelims and 53.74 in Finals) and winning the 200 breast setting an Academy Record and D1 Rutgers Pool Record (1:58.95)
  • Senior Caelin Weaver (Olive Branch, Miss.) – coming in second in the 100 fly setting an Academy Record twice (49.06 in prelims and 48.97 in finals)
  • Sophomore Patrick Tolloti (Dover, Ohio) – coming in third in the 100 breast (55.21), and third in the 200 breast (2:02.87)
  • Sophomore Matthew Mizell (Merritt Island, Fla.) – coming in fourth in the 100 back (49.78), and second in the 200 back (1:49.25)
  • 200 Free Relay of Higgins, Weaver, Monahan and junior Jack Welch (Chesapeake, Va.) – winning with an Academy Record & D1 Rutgers Pool Record time of 1:20.60 (prelims were 1:22.11, also an NCAA cut)
  • 400 Medley Relay of Mizell, Monahan, Weaver and junior Daniel Moore (Riverview, Fla.) winning in 3:18.90
  • 200 Medley Relay - Mizell, Monahan, Weaver, Welch – winning in an Academy Record time (1:28.84)
  • 400 Free Relay – D. Moore, Monahan, Welch and freshman David McCranie (Woodbridge, Va.) in a time trial (3:00.92)

Aside from the top-eight finishes listed above, the following Mariners were also A-Finalists (1st through 8th place):

  • The 800 free relay team of D. Moore, junior John Cairns (Durham, N.C.), McCranie and freshman Jack Pellegrino (Cape Coral, Fla.)
  • Pellegrino in the 500 free (sixth)
  • Higgins (third), Weaver (fourth), Welch (fifth), D. Moore (sixth) and McCranie (eighth) in the 50 free
  • Senior Michael Moore (Los Alamos, N.M.) in the 400 IM (fourth)
  • Freshman William Schneider (Canton, Ohio) in the 100 fly (seventh)
  • D. Moore in the 200 free (third)
  • Weaver in the 100 back (seventh)
  • Hebert (third) and freshman Anthony Koczwara (South Elgin, Ill.) (sixth) in the one-meter dive
  • Freshman Davis Caldwell (Isle of Palms, S.C.) in the 1650 free (sixth)
  • D. Moore (first), McCranie (fourth) and Welch (eighth) in the 100 free
  • and M. Moore in the 200 fly (fourth)

Two Mariner divers, McMillan and Hebert, will look to qualify for nationals through the NCAA Diving Regional Meet next weekend, Feb. 28-29, up at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. The rest of the Mariner swimmers who hit NCAA cuts will await word from the NCAA on whether their times will qualify them for the 2020 NCAA DIII Championships March 18-21 in Greensboro, N.C.
