GLASSBORO, N.J. (Feb. 1, 2020) – For the second time this season, a USMMA men's swim & dive dual meet came down to the final relay, and this time the Mariners came out on top, as their 200 freestyle relay team defeated Rowan's by just six-hundredths of a second to clinch a 154-146 road victory over the #14 Profs on Saturday.
Merchant Marine (6-2) led by just three points going into the last event, and with the team of juniors Daniel Moore (Riverview, Fla.) and Jack Higgins (Needham, Mass.), senior Caelin Weaver (Olive Branch, Miss.) and junior Jack Welch (Chesapeake, Va.) out-touching Rowan's team 1:24.58 to 1:24.64, the Mariners claimed the 11 team points for the relay win to secure the exciting win over the nationally-ranked squad. The 1:24.58 was a season-best time for the Mariners by a half-second.
USMMA won a total of seven events – six individual plus the free relay win. Senior Nolan Monahan (Stafford, Va.) earned two victories, as he touched first in the 200 free (1:44.63) and the 200 individual medley (1:57.00).
Welch won the 50 free in 21.37, sophomore Matthew Mizell (Merritt Island, Fla.) triumphed in the 200 backstroke in 1:56.06, classmate Patrick Tolloti (Dover, Ohio) won the 200 breaststroke in 2:07.49 (a season-best by 1.5 seconds) and junior Gillem McMillan (Knoxville, Tenn.) was first in the three-meter dive with a score of 338.03.
Other season-bests for the Mariners from the meet came from Monahan in the 100 free (46.57), Welch in the 100 free (47.70), Tolloti in the 100 breast (57.97) and Higgins in the 100 breast (58.35) and the 200 breast by five seconds (2:15.63).
