KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 18, 2020) – The USMMA men's swimming & diving team lost its dual meet to arch-rival Coast Guard over Friday and Saturday, 152.5-147.5. The Mariners' record drops to 5-2 in defeat, while the Bears improve to 7-2 with the win.
The meet was so close, it was actually tied going into the final event – the 400 free relay – but the Bears touched first in 3:08.47, just 28-hundredths of a second ahead of the Mariners' second-place team.
In diving action on Friday night, junior Gillem McMillan (Knoxville, Tenn.) won both one-meter and three-meter boards with scores of 256.50 and 306.45, respectively.
On Saturday, senior Nolan Monahan (Stafford, Va.) won three events for the Mariners, the 100 breaststroke (56.65), the 200 breast (2:06.09) and the 200 individual medley (1:55.61). He was also the second leg of the 200 medley relay with sophomore Matthew Mizell (Merritt Island, Fla.), senior Caelin Weaver (Olive Branch, Miss.) and junior Jack Welch (Chesapeake, Va.) that started the meet with a victory in 1:32.73, which dropped two seconds from their season-best.
Weaver also picked up victories in two events, the 100 backstroke (52.50) and the 100 butterfly (51.59). Mizell tied Weaver for the win in a wild finish to the 100 back (52.50), where both he and Weaver out-touched the Coast Guard swimmer in the 100 back by just one-hundredth of a second. Another victory came from freshman Davis Caldwell (Isle of Palms, S.C.), who touched first in the 1000 free with a time of 9:59.90.
When the team got back to Kings Point, they paid tribute to their seven graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony honoring Monahan, Weaver, John Luke Gallagher (Clarkesville, Ga.), Maximilian Haubrich (Grayslake, Ill.), Zachary Hess (Vernon, Conn.), Michael Moore (Los Alamos, N.M.) and Matthew Stegen (Mandeville, La.).
