NEW YORK (Jan. 11, 2020) – The Merchant Marine men's swimming & diving team made its way to Manhattan on Saturday for a non-conference dual meet with the #6 NYU Violets at the Palladium Athletic Facility. The decision went in favor of the sixth-ranked Violets by a 207-93 margin.
The Mariners picked up wins in three events, with those coming in the 100 freestyle by junior Daniel Moore (Riverview, Fla.), the one-meter dive by junior Gillem McMillan (Knoxville, Tenn.) and the 200 freestyle relay.
In addition to the three wins for the Mariners, nearly 30 season-best times fell.
In the 1,000 freestyle, freshman Davis Caldwell (Isle of Palms, S.C.) and James Kaleel (Ortonville, Mich.) set season bests followed by a season-best time in the 200 freestyle by Moore. During the 400 medley relay sophomore Matthew Mizell (Merritt Island, Fla.) set a season-best time in the 100 backstroke as did sophomore John Jansen (Tampa, Fla.).
As the afternoon progressed more season-best times fell including Dan Fry (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) in the 100 breast, along with junior Jack Higgins (Needham, Mass.) and senior Michael Moore (Los Alamos, N.M.). The 200 fly saw a quartet of Mariners set season-best times as junior Steven Rothe (Tucson, Ariz.), senior Maximilian Haubrich (Grayslake, Ill.), junior Jake Breschi (Perry Hall, Md.) and sophomore Alex Boschma (Ocala, Fla.) all trimmed their season-best times.
Junior Jack Welch (Chesapeake, Va.), freshman William Schneider (Canton, Ohio) and sophomore Nathan Mathes (Anacortes, Wash.) all set season-best times in the 50 free in advance of Moore taking first in the 100 freestyle while also setting a season-best time by one second in the victory.
Two season-best times fell in the 200 backstroke, as Mizell and Jansen both notched 2019-20 bests; while three season-best times went down in the 200 breaststroke as sophomore Patrick Tolloti (Dover, Ohio), Moore and junior Kyle Pins (Fredericksburg, Va.) notched bests. During the 500 free, four more season-best times were set; this time by freshmen Jack Pellegrino (Cape Coral, Fla.) and Caldwell, as well as Breschi and Kaleel.
During the 200 individual medley, Moore set his third season-best time of the afternoon, as did Jansen, who shaved two seconds off his best time this season. During the final event of the day Higgins led off with a season-best in the 50 freestyle, helping lead the quartet to a victory in the 200 freestyle relay to close out the afternoon.
Diving competition was conducted earlier in the morning, however, those scores are not available at the time of this release and will be added upon their availability.
Merchant Marine (3-1, 3-0 Skyline) resumes league competition on Tuesday evening in a double-dual at the Riesenberg Aquatic Center on the SUNY Maritime campus. The Mariners will dual against both the host Privateers as well as the Mount St. Mary Knights beginning at 6 p.m. in Throggs Neck.
