Mariner Women Post Impressive Eighth-Place Showing At Pre-Atlantic Regional Meet

CANTON, N.Y. (Oct. 12, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's cross country team participated in St. Lawrence University's Hoffman Invitational/Pre-Atlantic Regional Meet on Saturday and the Mariners performed really well against some solid regional competition. USMMA came in eighth place out of the 20 teams at the event with a total of 239 points. 

Freshman Sayra Raya (Wasco, Calif.) led the way for the Mariners with a 25th-place showing on the 6K campus course at SLU with a time of 24:02.2. Senior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) placed 34th in 24:15.6 and not far behind her was sophomore Robin King (Raymond, Ohio), who came in 36th in 24:16.4. 

Sophomore Anna Grafton (Belmont, N.H.) and senior Carissa Buonerba (Atlanta, Ga.) rounded out Merchant Marine's top-five in 72nd and 74th places with times of 25:06.6 (71 points) and 25:09.9 (73 points), respectively.

Up next, the Mariners will take part in the Inter-Regional Border Battle hosted by Rowan University next Saturday, Oct. 19, at Gloucester County Dream Park in Logan Township, N.J. The women's 6K race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. At the event, USMMA is scheduled to take on arch-rival Coast Guard head-to-head for a point in the 2019-20 Superintendents' Trophy standings.
