SAYVILLE, N.Y. (Aug. 30, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's cross country team dominated the season-opening Friends & Alumni Meet hosted by St. Joseph's-Long Island at the Broadway Ave. Park on Friday evening. The Mariners had seven runners place in the top-10 on the night.
Freshman Sayra Raya (Wasco, Calif.) finished well ahead of her competition on the 4K course, as she was the only runner to post a sub-16-minute time when she crossed the finish line in 15:51.1. Sophomore Robin King (Raymond, Ohio) came in third place in 16:23.8.
USMMA had its next four finishers place fifth through eighth – junior Grace Poe (Long Point, Conn.) (fifth in 16:44), senior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) (sixth in 16:49.3), sophomore Anna Grafton (Belmont, N.H.) (seventh in 16:52) and senior captain Carissa Buonerba (Atlanta, Ga.) (eighth in 16:54.8). Rounding out the Mariners' top-seven was sophomore Brooke Jorstad (La Crosse, Wis.), who came in 10th with a time of 17:08.4.

The Mariners will take the next two weeks off from competition and will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the annual New York Tech Invitational hosted on the campus of nearby NYIT. The women's 5K race will begin at 11 a.m.
