• Smith Named Skyline Rookie Of The Year; Three Mariners Earn All-Skyline And One Lands On All-Sportsmanship Team

    The Skyline Conference announced the postseason awards and All-Skyline Teams for women’s volleyball on Monday and USMMA had a total of four student-athletes honored. Freshman Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) was chosen by the conference head coaches as the Skyline Rookie of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Skyline First Team along with senior Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.). Sophomore Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) was selected to the All-Skyline Second Team and senior Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) was chosen as the Mariners’ representative on the All-Sportsmanship Team.

    The #2-seed USMMA women’s volleyball team suffered a heartbreaking five-set loss to top-seeded Manhattanville on Saturday night in the Skyline Championship Finals in a packed and loud Kennedy Gymnasium. In defeat, the Mariners end the season with a 20-7 record, while the Valiants improve to 24-5 and earn the Skyline’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

    The #2-seed U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women’s volleyball team flipped the script from last year and defeated #3-seed Mount St. Vincent in an exciting five-set match in the Skyline Semifinals on Thursday night inside the Liebertz Gymnasium. This is the third-straight year that the Mariners played the Dolphins to a five-set marathon at home in the Skyline Championships, as USMMA won in the finals in 2017 and lost in the semis last season.

    The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women’s volleyball team had its final tune-up before the Skyline playoffs with a non-conference tri-match at Ramapo College on Saturday. The Mariners defeated the host Roadrunners in a five-set thriller, 3-2, to start the day before closing it out with a straight-set sweep of Lehman College. USMMA’s record improves to 19-6 after the two victories.

    The USMMA women’s volleyball team swept Old Westbury on Monday night in a Skyline Conference match that was a “home contest” for the Panthers, but played at the Mariners’ Liebertz Gymnasium. Merchant Marine improves to 16-6 (9-1 Skyline) with the victory, while OW falls to 7-10 (2-6 Skyline).

The Mariners’ winning-streak extends to 10 matches, as they improve to 12-5 (5-0 Skyline). FSC falls to 10-8 (2-1 Skyline) with the loss.

    Freshman outside hitter Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) registered her 13th match with double-digit kills as she led the USMMA women's volleyball team to a 3-0 rout of Mount St. Mary in Skyline Conference action Tuesday evening at the Liebertz Gym. The final set scores were 25-18, 25-15, and 25-15. With the victory, the Mariners improved to 11-5 on the season and remain undefeated in Skyline Conference action, 4-0. The Knights dropped to 7-10 overall and evened to 2-2 in league play.

    The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women’s volleyball team hosted a non-conference tri-match on Saturday and celebrated Senior Day prior to the first match. The Mariners defeated both Rutgers-Newark (25-13, 25-18, 25-22) and former Landmark Conference foe Moravian (25-21, 25-22, 25-19) to improve to 10-5 on the year, including eight straight sweeps.

The final set scores were 25-6, 25-7, and 25-6. With the win, the Mariners improve to 5-5 on the season (1-0 Skyline). The Maccabees are now 0-9 overall (0-4 Skyline).

The final set scores were 25-14, 25-8, and 25-22. With the win, the Mariners improved to 4-5 on the season, while the Privateers dropped to 2-7 overall.

    The USMMA women’s volleyball team split matches on day one of the 10th Annual Maritime Classic on Saturday at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners lost the first match, 3-1, to Maine Maritime, and then swept Massachusetts Maritime, 3-0, in the nightcap. In between the two Merchant Marine matches, Maine Maritime defeated SUNY Maritime in straight sets.
