BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team won on the road at Skyline Conference foe St. Joseph's-Brooklyn Thursday night in straight sets, 25-9, 25-10, 25-15, at the Bears' Hill Center Gym. With the victory, the Mariners improve to 15-6 (8-1 Skyline), while SJC falls to 7-8 (4-3 Skyline) in defeat.
Once again USMMA was led by the duo of freshman Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sophomore Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.), as Smith led all players with 14 kills as part of a double-double and 17-point effort with 11 digs, two service aces and two assisted blocks, while Gilbertson recorded 12 kills, an ace and two assisted blocks.
Senior setter Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) had a match-high 34 assists to go along with four aces in the victory, while classmate Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) led all players on the night with 19 digs.
Sophomore Juliet Vendl (Colorado Springs, Colo.) contributed nine kills on a match-best .500 hitting on the night (9K-1E/16TA). And senior Alaina Hudson (King George, Va.) served up five aces over the three sets.
For St. Joe's, senior Briana Marrazzo registered five kills, freshman Kaitlyn Intindola had eight assists and classmate Carol Melo led the way defensively with 11 digs.
Up next, the Mariners will take on Old Westbury in a Skyline Conference match on Monday night, Oct. 21. The match was originally supposed to be at Old Westbury, but it has been moved to the Liebertz Gymnasium and will now begin at 7:30 p.m. Live stats and a live video feed of the match will be available with a link on the USMMA Women's Volleyball Schedule Page.
