Smith Selected As Skyline Rookie Of The Week; Kappas Earns Honor Roll Nod

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 24, 2019) – On Tuesday, the Skyline Conference announced that USMMA freshman Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) was selected as the league's Rookie of the Week for women's volleyball, while senior Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) landed on the weekly honor roll. The accolades come after the duo's performances in the Mariners' two home sweeps last week over Yeshiva on Tuesday and Pratt on Friday.

Smith earns recognition from the Skyline for the second-straight week, as she was Player of the Week last week. She put down 3.67 kills per set in the two matches. She had 13 kills on .476 hitting in the win over the Maccabees Tuesday and followed that up with nine kills against the Cannoneers Friday. The freshman also recorded six service aces and two assisted blocks, accounting for a Mariner-best 29.0 points over the two matches.

This is the second time this year that Kappas landed on the honor roll, as she also did so back on Sept. 9. The senior setter dished out 9.33 assists over six sets and also served up 10 aces in the pair of sweeps for Merchant Marine. She recorded 32 assists on Tuesday in the win over the Maccabees and finished the week with a 24-assist effort on Friday in the victory over the Cannoneers.

Four other Mariners are ranked among the Skyline leaders – sophomore Juliet Vendl (Colorado Springs, Colo.) ranks second in hitting percentage (.330), classmate Cadee Fromm (Enid, Okla.) is third with 0.61 blocks per set, fellow sophomore Shelby Bowman (Redmond, Wash.) ranks seventh with 2.77 kills per set and senior Nicole Ibinson's (Fredericksburg, Va.) 3.50 assists per set rank eighth in the Skyline.

As a team, the Mariners lead the conference with 1.25 digs per set and are second in three categories – hitting percentage (.196), kills per set (10.82) and assists per set (10.00). USMMA is also ranked 20th in the nation in holding opponents to a .093 hitting percentage and 37th with 2.76 service aces per set.
