KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Aug. 30, 2019) – The USMMA women's volleyball team opened the 2019 season with a sweep over visiting Lehman College on Friday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium – 25-6, 25-9, 25-7.
Sophomore Shelby Bowman (Redwood, Wash.) led all players on the night with 12 kills, while senior Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) dished out 14 assists over the first two sets and sophomore Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) tallied 11 helpers in the final set. Sophomore Juliet Vendl (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) also chipped in offensively, as Vendl had six kills and Gilbertson slammed down five.
Senior Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) and freshman Skyler Burnham (Reading, Pa.) led the way on the back row with five digs each, while Kappas picked up four. The Mariners had a total of 18 service aces on the night, as Kappas tallied a match-high five and Burnham registered three.
Merchant Marine held the Lightning to just four kills on the night and a -.268 hitting percentage. Senior Ariana Pradieu was one of four players with a kill and she also led the squad with four digs.
Up next, the Mariners will travel to Brooklyn College next Thursday, Sept. 5, for a non-conference match against the Bulldogs that begins at 7 p.m. at Brooklyn's West Quad Gymnasium. Any live links that may be available for the match will be posted on the USMMA Women's Volleyball Schedule Page.
