Lefler Earns Second-Straight Skyline Player Of The Week Honor; Gilbertson Named Rookie Of The Week


KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2018) – A pair of U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball players swept the Skyline Conference weekly honors for the week ending Oct. 13, the league announced on Monday. Senior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) was selected as the conference's Player of the Week for the second-straight week and third time this season, while freshman Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) earned Rookie of the Week honors for the third time this year. 

Lefler had another masterful week for the Mariners, who won all three matches they played on the week. The senior led the team with 42 kills (5.25 per set), including a 20-kill performance against St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Saturday. She followed that up with 15 kills and nine digs vs. Sarah Lawrence. Lefler accounted for 47.5 points on the 3-0 week for USMMA (5.94 per set). 

Gilbertson accounted for 32 points for the Mariners over the three matches (5.33 per set), putting down 23 kills (3.83 per set) with a .383 hitting percentage (23k-5e-47ta). She also averaged 2.17 digs per set over the six sets she played in the Mariners' 3-0 week.

Gilbertson and Lefler rank one and two, respectively in the Skyline statistical leaders for both kills per set and points per set. Gilbertson has a league-best 4.28 kills and 5.06 points per set, while Lefler is right behind with 3.96 kills and 4.61 points per set. They both rank in the top-10 in hitting percentage in the Skyline, with Gilbertson ranking fourth with a .277 clip and Lefler ninth at .228. Gilberston is also eighth with 0.64 service aces per set. 

They are two of five Mariners that rank in the top-10 in the Skyline in a statistical category. Freshman Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) continues to lead the conference with 9.16 assists per set; junior Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) is second with 4.41 digs per set; and freshman Cadee Fromm (Enid, Okla.) ranks third with 0.77 blocks per set and fourth with a .273 hitting percentage. 

On the national level, Gilbertson ranks sixth and Lefler ranks 24th in points per set, while Gilbertson ranks 15th and Lefler ranks 30th in kills per set. As a team, the Mariners are in the top-25 in the country in two categories – third in keeping opponents to a .059 hitting percentage and 24th with 2.80 aces per set. IMPORTANT NOTE: The Mariners' upcoming match against Yeshiva University tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 18, has been moved to Kings Point at the Liebertz Gym, but will remain a Yeshiva home match. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
