KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 25, 2018) – The Skyline Conference announced its weekly award winners for women's volleyball on Monday and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy freshman Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) was selected as the league's Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sept. 23. The honor comes after her performances in three of the Mariners' four matches last week.
Gilbertson was named to All-Maritime Classic Team after helping the Mariners to a 2-2 record on the week (three matches played). She hit .307 (37k-14e-75a), averaging 4.11 kills and 0.89 service aces in the process. In a three-set sweep over Maritime on Friday, Gilbertson put down a career-high 17 kills and served five aces. She had nine-plus kills in all three of her appearances. The rookie leads the Skyline with 4.00 kills per set average.

Gilbertson ranks in the top-25 in the nation in two statistical categories - her 4.70 points per set are good for 13th in the country and her 4.00 kills per set rank 24th. Senior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) also ranks 33rd in Division III with 10.68 attacks per set. Among Skyline players, Gilbertson is first in kills per set and points per set, while her .219 hitting percentage is good for eighth. Lefler is third in the skyline with 3.32 kills per set and second in points per set. Three other Mariners rank in the top-10 in the league – freshman Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) is the conference leader with 9.04 assists per set, classmate Cadee Fromm (Enid, Okla.) ranks third with 0.83 blocks per set and fourth with a .250 hitting percentage and junior Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) is tied for third in the Skyline with 4.00 digs per set.
As a team, the Mariners rank first in the Skyline with a .150 hitting percentage, 10.00 assists per set and 10.64 kills per set. They are also third with 1.34 blocks per set. To view the Skyline statistical leaders, click here.
The Mariners return to action tonight when they open up Skyline Conference action on the road at St. Joseph's-Long Island.
