Mariners Drop Close One To Montclair State, 3-1

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 8, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team lost a tough match to visiting Montclair State, 3-1, on Saturday at the Lierbertz Gymnasium. The defeat drops the Mariners' record to 2-1 on the season, while the Red Hawks improve to 3-3. 

Each set was decided by five points or fewer with MSU taking the first, 25-20, before USMMA rallied back to claim the second, 25-23. The third set went in favor of the visitors, 25-20, again, and Montclair sealed the match with a 27-25 comeback victory in the fourth set. 

Three Mariners recorded double-digit kill efforts on the day, as senior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) tied for the match-high with 21 kills, freshman Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) added 14 and was one dig shy of a double-double and classmate Juliet Vendl (Colorado Springs, Colo.) contributed 12 kills. 

Freshman Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) was on point with her setting, as she dished out a match- and career-high 49 assists and senior libero Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) led all players in the match with 22 digs. Junior Alaina Hudson (King George, Va.) also chipped in defensively with nine digs on the afternoon. 

Montclair was led by freshman Carly Waterman, who matched Lefler's high of 21 kills and also picked up a double-double with 11 digs. Classmate Leah Higgins added 15 kills, while senior setter Ashley Griffith had 34 assists to go along with nine digs. Sophomore libero Alexandra Campos registered a team-best 14 digs in the match. 

The Mariners are back in action on Tuesday night, Sept. 11, when they travel in to Manhattan for a matchup against non-conference opponent Hunter College.
