Mariners Suffer Road Sweep At New Rochelle Thursday Night

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (Oct. 19, 2017) – The USMMA women's volleyball team lost a non-conference matchup up at the College of New Rochelle on Thursday night. The Blue Angels swept the Mariners, 29-27, 25-20, 25-21, to drop Merchant Marines' record to 12-6, while CNR improves to 15-10. 

Sophomore setter Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) recorded a double-double, as she led all players in the match 25 assists and 11 digs. Senior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) had a match-high 14 kills on a .308 hitting percentage. Junior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) added seven kills and six digs and senior Alex Miller (Stevensville, Mich.) chipped in defensively with seven digs. Pope and fellow senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) both had a team-best four blocks apiece. 

New Rochelle was led by sophomore Cristal Liciaga, who had a double-double with a team-high 11 kills to go along with 12 assists. Classmate Simaima Fukofuka contributed 10 kills, while grad student Melanie Ann Lopez Soto dished out 20 assists and junior libero Stephanie Garcia picked up a team-high 10 digs. The Blue Angels recorded nine blocks on the night, led by senior Tamara Beckford, who registered six. 

The Mariners return to action on Saturday, Oct. 21, when they travel out to Farmingdale State for a Skyline Conference tri-match, where they will square off against the host Rams at 10 a.m., before taking on SUNY Maritime at 12-noon.
