Mariners Open Skyline Action With Straight-Set Victory Over Yeshiva

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 5, 2017) – The USMMA women's volleyball team defeated visiting Yeshiva University in straight sets on Tuesday night, 25-18, 25-10 and 25-12, for its third-straight victory to start the season. The Mariners improve to 3-0 (1-0 Skyline), while the Maccabees fall to 0-2 (0-1 Skyline) in defeat. 

Junior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) recorded a career-high 23 kills, while hitting at an impressive .529 clip on the night. Senior Alex Miller (Stevensville, Mich.) served as Merchant Marine's setter for the night and tallied 38 assists to go along with six digs and junior Megan Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) led the team defensively with seven digs. 

Senior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) added eight kills on a .250 hitting percentage and a match-high seven service aces on the night, while classmate Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) contributed six kills with a .500 hitting percentage and two blocks. 

For the Macs, senior Gavriela Colton had a team-high two kills and a match-high three blocks. Sophomore libero Sarah Leah Zians led all players on the night with eight digs. 

The Mariners will travel up to Purchase, N.Y., to take on non-conference opponent Manhattanville tomorrow night, Sept. 6. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Valiants' Kennedy Gym.
