KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 9, 2015) – On Friday night, the USMMA women's volleyball team hosted the first two matches of the Kings Point Volleyball Classic at the Liebertz Gymnasium. After a long five-set win by John Jay over Lehman in the first match, the Mariners took care of the Bloodhounds in straight sets (25-19, 25-20, 25-19) in the nightcap to improve to 11-8 on the season, while John Jay fell to 5-10.
Sophomore Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) led all players in the match with 15 kills, while classmate Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) recorded a double-double with 24 assists and 16 digs. Freshman Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) picked up a team-high 17 digs and sophomore Rebecca Snyder (Jacksonville, Fla.) chipped in with eight kills.
Three players recorded double-doubles for the Bloodhounds, as sophomore Rachel Eng had a team-best 11 kills and a match-high 21 digs, while junior Katrina Zapanta registered a match-high 28 assists and 10 digs and sophomore Savannah Davis had 10 kills and 12 digs. Senior Latanya Buckham contributed 10 digs on the night.
The Mariners are back in action tomorrow for the second day of the KP Volleyball Classic. The first match is scheduled for 9 a.m. at the Liebertz Gym and will feature Kean University against Lehman. Merchant Marine will then take on Lehman at 11 a.m. before Kean squares off against John Jay at 1 p.m. USMMA will take part in the finale, scheduled for 3 p.m. against the Cougars of Kean.
