KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 6, 2015) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team dropped a non-conference match on Tuesday night at home to Hunter College, 3-1. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 10-8 overall on the season, while the Hawks improve to 9-9.
Sophomores Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) and Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) both recorded double-doubles for USMMA, as Pope led the team with 11 kills to go along with 12 digs, while Gleason registered a team-best 28 kills and 16 digs. Freshman Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) contributed seven kills and 10 digs and sophomore Rebecca Snyder (Jacksonville, Fla.) also had seven kills on the night. Defensively, junior Darin Zacharias (Virginia Beach, Va.) picked up 12 digs in the match.
The Hawks won the opening set, 25-22, and then took a commanding 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-18 second-set triumph. The Mariners fought back to within one set by winning the third, 25-22, but Hunter wrapped up the match with a 25-9 victory in the fourth set.
For Hunter, senior Angelica Mae Aquino led all players in the match with 15 kills and also picked up a double-double with 11 digs. Three other Hawks recorded double-doubles on the night, as freshman Miranda Hogan dished out a match-high 36 assists with 12 digs, sophomore Julia Connolly had 11 kills and 17 digs and senior Paola Martinez recorded 12 kills and 14 digs. Freshman Taylor Kerr-Haiduk had 14 kills for Hunter and freshman libero Haley Trunkett picked up a match-best 18 digs.
Up next, the Mariners will host the Kings Point Classic this weekend, where they will open up action on Friday night, Oct. 9, with a 7 p.m. match against John Jay. The tournament will continue on Saturday with an 11 a.m. match against Lehman and a 3 p.m. showdown against Kean University.
