Volleyball Opens Landmark Action With 3-1 Home Loss To Scranton

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 22, 2015) – On Tuesday night, the USMMA women's volleyball team hosted the University of Scranton in the 2015 Landmark Conference opener for both teams. Merchant Marine lost to the visiting Royals, 3-1, falling to 7-4 overall on the season (0-1 Landmark), while Scranton improved to 13-5 (1-0 Landmark) with the win.

The Royals won the first set, 25-18, but the Mariners gave them a run for their money in the second set, going into extras before the visitors took the frame, 28-26, to go up 2-0 in the match. USMMA captured the third set 25-15, but Scranton closed out the night with a 25-16 win in the fourth and final set.

Two Mariners recorded triple-doubles on the night as sophomore Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) had 10 kills to go along with 16 assists and 12 digs, while freshman Brianne Cook (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) recorded 10 kills, 13 digs and 20 digs. It was Cook's second straight triple-double.

Sophomore Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) led USMMA with 13 kills, while also picking up 13 digs. Freshman Hannah Hill (Parkersburg, W.Va.) led all players in the match with 22 digs and classmate Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) also recorded double-digit digs with 12.

For Scranton, freshman Kristin Kirwan recorded a match-high 18 kills, while junior Brittany Cafiero dished out a match-best 38 assists to go along with 12 digs. Three other Royals recorded double-digit digs – senior Lizzy Zimmermann had a team-high 14, while classmate Kim Marino had 13 and sophomore Morgan Rentzheimer picked up 11.

The Mariners will return to the court on Thursday night, Sept. 24, when they travel up to the Bronx to take on Mount St. Vincent. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Dolphins' Peter Jay Sharp Center.
