Mariners Open 2015 With Straight-Set Win At Brooklyn Tuesday Night

Box Score

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Sept. 1, 2015) – The USMMA women's volleyball team began the 2015 campaign off on the right foot on Tuesday night, picking up a straight-set victory over Brooklyn College on the road, 25-14, 25-17, 25-10, at the Bulldogs' West Quad Center.

Sophomore Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) led the way with nine kills on the night, while also picking up eight digs. Classmate Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) dished out 27 assists to go along with eight digs and three service aces. Freshman Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) paced the squad with 12 digs and five aces in her collegiate debut. Junior Jordy Macbeth (Orlando, Fla.) contributed with eight kills, while junior Amanda See (Waukesha, Wis.) and sophomore Rebecca Snyder (Jacksonville, Fla.) both added five kills apiece.

USMMA jumped out to 8-2 and 11-4 leads early in the first set before Brooklyn fought back to bring the score within five at 16-11. The Mariners finished strong, though, scoring eight of the next nine points and eventually winning the set on a kill by Macbeth.

In the second set, Merchant Marine built up a 13-7 lead, but the Bulldogs rallied to within one with five straight points to make the score 13-12 and force interim head coach Alexa Santiago to burn the first timeout of the set. The breather would pay off for the Mariners, as they went on to give up just five more points the rest the way and took a commanding 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-17 second-set victory.

The third set was much of the same for USMMA, as the Mariners went ahead 13-6 midway through. After a Bulldog kill made the score 13-7, Merchant Marine pulled away for the victory by allowing just three more points down the stretch.

Brooklyn was led by Sasha Roopchand, who had six kills and five digs. Crystal Wu added 14 assists and Francesca LoCascio picked up a team-high 11 digs.

The Mariners return to action on tomorrow night, Wednesday, Sept. 2, with another non-conference tilt, this against The Pratt Institute. The contest is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium in O'Hara Hall.
