Vandermeer Earns Skyline Track Athlete Of The Year After Leading Mariners To Second Place Finish At Championship Meet

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (April 29, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's track & field team came in second place in the 2019 Skyline Conference Championship Meet, hosted by Farmingdale State on Sunday. Junior Alexa Vandermeer (Grove Heights, Minn.) was named the Skyline Track Athlete of the Year after scoring the most points for any team at the event. 

The USMMA women kept it close all day against the eventual champions, the host Rams, as they finished the day with 177 team points to FSC's 191. It was the second straight season that the Mariners placed as runners-up at the championship event. 

Vandermeer was a three-time champion in the 200m (27.24), the 400m (1:01.75) and the long jump (4.59m – 15-00.75), and also came in second place in three events. 

The other individual conference champions (and First Team All-Skyline performers) were junior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) in the 800m (2:27.79), freshman Madison Reddick (Baker, Mont.) in the javelin (33.02m – 108-04) and classmate Breanna Frank (Sidney, Mont.) in the pole vault (2.10m – 6-10.75). 

Earning Second Team All-Skyline performances with second-place finishes were Vandermeer in the 100m (13.32), Frank in the triple jump (8.96m – 29-04.75), D'Arcy in the high jump (1.40m – 4-07.00), freshman Brooke Jorstad  (La Crosse, Wis.) in the 5000m (19:40.34), junior Ally McFadyen (Saint James, N.Y.) in the hammer throw (43.30m (142-01)) and the two relay teams – the 4x100m team of Vandermeer, D'Arcy, Reddick and Frank (54.90) and the 4x400m team of the same runners in a different order (4:28.91).

The Mariners who have qualified for the ECAC Championship Meet will continue to train for the event which will take place on May 15-16 at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, Conn.
