HAVERFORD, Pa. (Jan. 27, 2018) – U.S. Merchant Marine Academy sophomore Alexa Vandermeer (Grove Heights, Minn.) broke the Academy Record in the 200 meter run with a time of 28.14 to lead the Mariners at Haverford College's McElligott Invite on Saturday. She was one of four Mariners to record top-10 finishes on the day, as the squad finished in sixth place (12.5 points) out of the seven teams that scored at the event.
This is the second time this season that Vandermeer set a new Academy Record, as back in December she set the new bar in the 300 meter run. The sophomore finished in fourth place in the 200 meter, which was USMMA's top finish on the day and earned the Mariners five points. She also came in sixth place in the 60 meter dash in 8.68 to grab another three points.
In the shot put, sophomore Ally McFadyen (Saint James, N.Y.) came in sixth place (10.12m / 33' 2.5") for three points and freshman Kitara Smolinski (Bailey, Colo.) placed seventh (9.89m / 32' 5.5") for 1.5 points.
Senior Alex Miller (Stevensville, Mich.) rounded out Merchant Marine's top-10 placers, coming in ninth in the 200 meters with a time of 30.60.
Up next, the Mariners will take part in the NYU Invite at the Armory in Manhattan on Friday, Feb. 9, beginning at 2 p.m. Live results for that meet will be available at this link.
